Toilet Not Flushing? Here’s 5 Reasons Why

If you’re a first-time buyer, it’s likely that you’ll encounter a common problem that many homeowners face at some point: a toilet that won’t flush. This can be especially frustrating for families that share one bathroom. Fortunately, these issues are typically easy to fix. Let’s take a look at some causes and solutions as to why your toilet might not be flushing…

#1 You’re Toilet Is Clogged

Clogs are typically the reason why your toilet isn’t able to flush. If there’s too much toilet paper or you’re flushing the wrong products, it’s likely that a clog will develop over time. Smaller blockages can be removed using a plunger. If this method doesn’t get rid of the clog, you can try pouring hot water down your toilet to dislodge the debris. Drain snakes may also be used to remedy the problem.

If these methods fail, it’s likely that you’ll need help from a licensed plumber. One way you can prevent clogs is by using less toilet paper and avoiding flushing other products that don’t break down as easily. Some of these items include paper towels, sanitary napkins and baby wipes. Homeowners should also avoid pouring grease and cooking oil down their toilets as this can easily clog their pipes.

#2 There’s Not Enough Water in the Tank

In some cases, there might not be enough water to flush waste. This can happen when water levels inside the toilet’s tank dip, making it harder for the toilet to get rid of waste. To check your tank’s water levels, remove the cover and check to see where the water rises. If it’s about an inch below the overflow tube, you have enough water. If it’s lower than that, your tank will need more water to flush.

Some toilets will even have a float gauge that can help you determine how much water is in the tank. To fix this problem, you will need to adjust the fill valve or float arm, which will allow more water into the tank. If you’re still having trouble with your water levels, you may need to contact a plumber for help.

#3 Handles or Chains May Be Disconnected

One simple problem that causes toilets not to flush is if the toilet’s handles or chains become disconnected. You can check for this issue by removing the cover and identifying the chain. It should be connected to the handle arm. If it’s not, simply reattach the chain by hooking it to the arm. If either the chain or the handle is broken, they can be easily replaced.

#4 Broken Flapper

Another common culprit is a broken flapper. Over time, this component can wear down and won’t form a proper seal, preventing the toilet from flushing. To check your toilet’s flapper, remove the cover and look for the flat, rubber piece at the bottom of the tank.

If the flapper appears cracked, discolored or warped, you will need to replace it. This can be done by turning off the water using the shut-off valve behind the toilet. Once this has been done, you can flush the toilet to empty the tank. Unhook the chain that connects the flapper to the handle and remove the old flapper.

Next, you’ll need to install the new flapper and reattach the chain to both the handle and flapper. Turn the water back on and flush the toilet a couple of times to make sure the new flapper is working properly.

#5 Rim Jet Blockages

Rim jet blockages may be another reason why your toilet is failing to flush properly. These jets allow for water to enter the toilet bowl during flushing. If they become clogged with debris or mineral buildup, flushing can be difficult.

Applying a mixture of warm water and vinegar into the overflow tube will help dislodge the debris. You can also use a bristled brush to gently clean off the jets, which are located inside the bowl. If this doesn’t fix the problem, or you notice that your rim jets become frequently clogged, it’s time to call a plumber.

Due to environmental factors like soil and climate type, foundational shifts can occur in Texas, which can damage the slabs that protect our home’s piping. Slabs can crack and leak, which can lower water pressure, cause mold growth and make your utility bills higher.
